Sudoku

The brainteaser that's taking the world by storm! Fill in the blanks without repeating digits in every row, column, and box. The challenge comes from having to fill a 9x9 grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box within the grid contains the digits 1-9. Sudoku is a highly addictive blend of logic and lateral thinking. Sound easy? You'll change your tune after your first round of Sudoku!

OK~ I finally read the 3rd page of this discussion... glad to see the blackberry trackball drives other people nuts too. Redsnapper's take on the odds of cracking the top 10 is right on. A solving time of 38 seconds and not one single bonus point??! You might as well just solve the puzzle for the sake of enjoyment.

valmcnulty, there are a lot more than 50 daily players. I am ranked around 2800 with ~8000 points, and everyday after I complete my puzzles, I move up around 20-30 ranks. The next day when I check my rank, I have moved down 7-10 ranks. So there are 7-10 active players around my score. I would say there are a minimum of 1000 people who complete the puzzles daily. A lot of them probably have no idea about this site.

boomingaway, other posters have also mentioned they figure there are about 1000 active players.
I think I get part of it-- turning in your score only affects the players who are immediately around your score. I was thinking it affected the whole line-up which is how I arrived at the 50 number! It seems the higher your rank gets, the less people there are playing around your score. Still not sure how you arrive at a min of 1000 people playing. Btw, hoopsfan made it to #9. It'll be interesting to see how many days it takes for #11 to push enorfleet out of #10.

1000 people was a very conservative approximation.

There are 5-10 people within 50 points of me, so if I had to guess, I would say 2500 people play everyday. It would definitely be cool to see points beyond the top 10 along with fastest times everyday.

Folks that are in say the top 50 have had to play consistenty for a few years, so are quite dedicated. So once you are trying to move up into these ranks you slow way down as everyone is moving up at the same rate each day. The spread between scores has more to do with when you started playing versus having more skill than the others. My guess is that once I got below 50 that the folks I passed were mostly people that had just stopped playing. Be interesting to see what my/our rank would be if you filtered out players that are not active any longer.

I just enjoy waking up and doing 4 sudoku puzzles along with coffee in the morning, before work. The points and the standings are a nice addition... would be nicer with more detail obviously

I emailed customer support a couple of questions the day before yesterday. Amazingly, an individual responded with something more than "See FAQs!"

Regarding the number of active daily players-- which doesn't mean regular players-- "there were 10,276 active players in the last 24 hours" as of yesterday @ 9:30AM. Not sure if *active* means individuals who logged on to the game or actually submitted scores.

Regarding whether we can go on line to access a complete list of players, their rank & scores and the players and times that are racking up the bonus points each day, all I was told is that they would "add my input as a feature request to the development team for future revision."

You should all shoot them an email: support@magmic.com. The more inquiries they receive, the more likely they might be to add all or part of that feature.

NOT that any of this rank & point stuff even matters!! Although the fact that people are tracking points on spreadsheets-- mine is a sea of small #s handwritten on pages at the back of my moleskine-- means perhaps, that when you do something regularly and happen to get a score for it, it's human nature to investigate how quickly you can move up in the ranks. I too will get back to enjoying my coffee, finish 2 more puzzles and get to work! :-)

Hi, all. I can shed some more light on the distributions and activity this weekend if I can get enough time to update all of my data. Also, I will add everyone from this discussion that I do not already have on my list. However, if my memory isn't too far off, I believe that there are 80,000+ players who have scored 1 or more points, but only about 58,000 who have scored 15 or more points. With a longer history on the top 10, I can tell you which ones have missed one or more games. The one that sticks in my mind as having missed on occasion is purplemathmom because the purplemath site is often used by my online students as a resource. Although I sent her a note a long time ago, she has never responded.

Marcocult, are you reading the mail here? I hope so. Here's a couple of questions for you and possibly the legal department:

Would I be violating any agreements, express or implied, with Magmic if I were to post my Sudoku spreadsheet data on a website that others could access?

Would Magmic feel I was infringing on its ownership of the data in any way if I were to post my Sudoku spreadsheet data on a website that others could access?

I hope you can give us an answer soon.

Hi, everyone. Here's some data for you. All of it is current as of yesterday when I was updating.
Of the top 125 players, I have data on 97 of them. Of those 97, 21 have scored less than 800 points since 1/1/2010 and 13 have scored 0 points in that same time period. 125th place was 34300 in case anyone is interested.

The closest I have to 1000th place is 973rd at 15432 and 1107th at 14348, 1000th is somewhere between 14348 and 15432 as of yesterday.

Also as of yesterday, there were 58176 players with scores greater than 15. This represents an increase of 6585 players since 1/1/2010 and an increase of 21965 players since 8/19/2009.

One of the players I have been tracking the longest was in 503rd place on 5/23/2009 and was in 1160th place yesterday morning having scored only 25 points in the interim. That tells us that only 657 players have passed him in that period of time. His score yesterday morning was 13968.

The person currently in 11th place has scored no points since 5/25/2009 and was in 6th place at that time. The most likely person to show up in the top 10 next is the person currently in 12th place with 57078 points as of yesterday.

The person currently in 10th place has scored 0 points since 1/1/2010 and scored only 2830 points since 5/25/2009 when he or she was in 7th place.

As of yesterday morning, I am tracking 423 players.

Later.

Don
